远景学院自然科学与社会科学教研室倾力推出访谈栏目《博雅时刻》第五期。本期，由远景学院学生朱佳雪主持，远景学院吴晛莉老师与段永健老师从管理学与地理学视角，展开跨学科全英文对话，介绍“大湾区”的提出背景，探讨湾区经济，解读湾区的发展的推动因素及其未来趋势。

Question 1:“What is the Bay Area economy?”

Chris:”The definition is a geographic area consisting of one or more bays, harbors, and adjacent islands which are indented inland from the coastline.”

Katherine:”The "economic effect" derived from the geographic location is known as the bay area economy.”

Question 2:“So why are the economically developed areas concentrated in the coastal zone? What makes these places grow very fast?”

Katherine:”There are two main reasons. traffic factors, and human factors. For cities, good transportation means better circulate for goods, and in turn it will generate greater economic value. Actually, Among the transportations, shipping has the highest economic value, because it can transport more goods with the lowest cost. For example, in the Ming Dynasty, Zheng He made seven voyages to the West, and the transportation he used was shipping.
Secondly, we can see people live in different regions have different personality. Generally speaking, people live by the sea have two very important characteristics. First, they have a strong sense of crisis, like Japanese; secondly, they are very open and creative, because, living by the sea, they must accept cultural shocks from all over the world, so, in general, people in coastal cities have strong sense of crisis and innovative thinking.”

Chris:”From a global perspective, most of the world's top urban agglomerations are located in the Bay Area, and the emergence is the co-driven result This prosperity is due to geographical and economic factors,such as population, climate，transportation，industry，trade, finance and so on. I'll take the San Francisco Bay Area as an example to tell you the importance of natural conditions and social factors in the development of the Bay Area.in terms of natural conditions., the San Francisco Bay Area belongs to the Mediterranean climate zone, generally hot and dry in summer and mild and rainy in winter. Therefore, the San Francisco Bay Area is one of the more livable areas in the United States, San Francisco Bay is an excellent natural haven. This sentence means that can dock ships without any artificial construction The type of harbor in the world is easily surrounded by large cities. Even when the Pacific Ocean is rough, the San Francisco Bay is calm, making it an ideal place for ships to dock. In terms of social factors, the world-famous high-tech research and development base Silicon Valley is located in the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area, and well-known companies such as Google, Apple, Facebook, Hewlett-Packard, and Tesla are representatives of the technological power of the San Francisco Bay.Major universities and institutions of higher learning include University of California, Berkeley, Stanford University, etc. Therefore, The San Francisco Bay Area is a veritable innovation base for science and education.”

Question 3: “In the future, if we want to continue to the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay area, what should we focus attention to?”

Chris:”Natural environment provide the basic conditions for regional economic development and resource aggregation, but the Bay Area economy relies more on the support of social factors, such as the collection of talents, technology, large enterprises, entrepreneurial capital, policies and other elements. Among them, Hong Kong is the world's financial and shipping center, Macao is an international free port and the world's tourism and leisure center, Guangzhou is a prestigious international trade center, Shenzhen is the world's factory and innovation center, and Dongguan, Foshan, Zhongshan and other areas have a strong manufacturing base. The Bay Area is home to many technology companies such as Tencent, Huawei and Gree, and is the most populour and fastest growing economy among the world's four major bay areas.”

Katherine:” Yes, and about the future, Firstly, we can continue to focus on the development of the former Pearl River Delta region, for example, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Today the companies of China's science and technology innovation, Huawei, Tencent, BYD, DJI were all born in this city. Secondly, we can continue to focus on the development of Hong Kong and Macao. Hong Kong's biggest advantage comes from two aspects, one is that a large number of foreign RMB funds can flow into the mainland from Hong Kong's financial market, and Hong Kong is also the window for attracting investment in the mainland. The second is that Hong Kong's education is even stronger. Among the top 100 universities in the world, five are in Hong Kong, such as the University of Hong Kong, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. And this two U…. are both top 50 universities in the world. In addition, Hong Kong and Macao's tertiary service industry is also in the top of the world, and it play a leading role in the integrated development of the Greater Bay Area, it also helped Guangdong Province to better capitalize on the advantages of the manufacturing sector. In a word, the economic potential of the Greater Bay Area is still very large, under the construction of China's infrastructure, we can see all kinds of transportation are now in all directions, and it takes the manufacturing industry to various important nodes in the Belt and Road. So under these conditions, we can try to make a bold prediction that the total GDP of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area will become the highest among the world's four major bay areas in five or even three years.
